What does the Data tell us for 2008

Estuary Name:

LAKE CONJOLA

Status of plan: Plan adopted (September 1998) and currently under comprehensive review
Actions undertaken:

Entrance Management Policy completed. 2002 and currently under review to assess climate change impacts and potential closure by coastal processes

Entrance spit dune stabilisation : first stage completed to repair damage from lake opening 2001

Second stage commenced 2005 and was destroyed in April 2006 by a coastal storm

Stormwater audit and remediation program completed

Caulerpa mapping completed 2002 with wash down bays installed 2001

Crown Lands Assessment for the southern shore reserves scheduled for 2003-2004. Foreshore rehabilitation plan to follow from assessment.

Education campaign and foreshore rehabilitation works included at 3 sites, Cunjurong Pt boat ramp, Entrance boat ramp and West lake Conjola foreshore

Nature Conservation

 Entrance management actions and any proposed interventions take account of shorebird breeding seasons.

Water Quality

Construction of reticulated sewerage scheme completed in 2008

 

Erosion and Sedimentation

Stormwater and road sedimentation audit completed 2002 with implementation of mitigation measures completed 2003 with outstanding works included in the Drainage Program.

Cultural Heritage

 

Flooding

Flood Study completed 2006. Information combines catchment and oceanic flood impacts and provides information to minimise risk to life and property by setting floor levels for development and informing the SES of potential flood extent and hazards.

Floodplain Risk Management Study and Management Plan scheduled for 2008-2009 commencement

 

Fishery

Fishing Haven Status 2002

Interim strategy adopted and implemented for the management of the invasive aquatic weed Caulerpa Taxifolia.

Boating plan of management review undertaken by NSW Maritime with assistance of the Southern Shoalhaven Natural Resources and Floodplain Management Committee. The review considered Caulerpa taxifolia.

Artificial fishing reefs due for installation in 2009

Recreation Fishing Trust grant funded fishing platform installed in 2008

Recreation, Waterway Access & Boating

Regional boat ramp proposed for Killarney St. Detailed design proposed for 2003 has been postponed due to increasing Caulerpa populations and the risk of spread to other estuaries.

Facility upgrade at the entrance boat ramp including a four table picnic shelter and double electric BBQ completed in 2003.

Access road and carpark at Cunjurong Point boat ramp upgrade completed in 2003.

Foreshore rehabilitation projects for Cunjurong Point and Conjola Entrance boat ramp reserves completed in 2006. ($50,000 each)

Boating plan of management review undertaken by NSW Maritime with assistance of the Southern Shoalhaven Natural Resources and Floodplain Management Committee. To be finalised late 2008.

Visual Quality

 Very Good

Estuary Entrance

The 2006 Easter coastal storm displaced large quantities of sand into the entrance channel and the electronic monitoring shows closure is progressing and is expected during 2006-2007. Entrance management plan activated with preparatory entrance survey underway to estimate intervention costs should entrance closure occur.

Biannually with additional meetings on an as needs basis.
