Catchment Management Action Project

The Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority (CMA), established by the New South Wales Government, provided a grant to Illawarra Landcare for bitou bush management which was carried out in conjunction with the Illawarra Noxious weed Authority and Shoalhaven City Council. The Southern Rivers CMA provided $36,000 for works between June 2004 and December 2004 and another $40,000 from January 2005 for continuing works until the end of 2005.

 During 2004/05 a total of 560 volunteer hours have been dedicated to removing 80 hectares of land infested with bitou bush. The volunteers also revegetated 19.4 hectares and planted 2, 452 endemic plants.

As part of this project Council’s contractor also spent 1, 228 hours removing bitou bush from 524 hectares of infested land and revegetated 19.4 hectares planting 1, 060 endemic plants.

Seven Mile Beach and Comerong Island both NSW National Parks were priority sites for works together with Culburra Beach and Sussex Inlet (Cudmirrah Beach).

Secondary sites where works have been completed include foreshores around Jervis Bay, Manyana, Bannister Head, Kioloa and Burrill Lake.

Southern ENVIROFUND Bitou Bush Control

At 19 sites throughout the southern Shoalhaven from Sussex Inlet to North Durras bitou bush control was applied. Eight Bushcare groups participated in bitou bush control during the project from January 2005 and are on-going until December 2005.

The funding for these works was obtained from the Commonwealth Envirofund which is part of the Natural Heritage Trust funding.

Culburra ENVIROFUND Bitou Control & Coastal Restoration Project

Funding for this project was also obtained from Commonwealth Envirofund which is part of the Natural Heritage Trust funding. Bitou bush control sites were located from Orient Point in the north to Kinghorne Point in the south during 2004/05.

  • 25 work bees with project officer to plant 1884 plants.
  • 30 work bees with project officer to control bitou bush and other coastal weeds.
  • Bushcare groups planted an extra1509 plants propagated at nursery. 
  • 10 Active Bushcare groups and several intermittently active groups participated in works.
