WETLANDS INVENTORY
Indicator descriptionShoalhaven Council in conjunction with the Shoalhaven Catchment Management Committee have received funding to undertake an inventory of coastal wetlands in the Shoalhaven. Part of this inventory has been to investigate the occurrence of wetlands that are not designated SEPP 14 using topographic maps and interpretation of aerial photography. Wetlands are important habitats for a diverse range of animals including water birds, frogs, invertebrates and fish species, as well as water loving plants such as sedges, rushes and various tree species. Wetlands are the border between terrestrial and aquatic environments and their condition reflects their ability to provide nursery and breeding grounds, improve water quality and provide high levels of biological productivity and nutrient recycling. This indicator is important as it both identifies wetlands in Shoalhaven and will provide valuable information on the condition of wetlands and management issues associated with wetlands in Shoalhaven |
