Managing vegetation clearing

  • controls on native vegetation clearing
  • incentives to reduce native vegetation clearing

Indicator description

Controlling the area cleared of native vegetation each year is an important part of maintaining the biodiversity of the Region. Options for controlling clearing can include: legislation, regulation, industry agreements or other forms of incentives to the community.

Where only small areas of a vegetation type within biological subregions are represented, or where they provide habitat for threatened or endangered species, then the community can often demand stringent controls on clearing.

The area of native vegetation in which clearing is controlled in relation to the total area of various types of vegetation in each biogeographic subregion indicates the response by society to the damage caused by over-clearing to the natural and human environment.
