Land restoration

  • area of degraded land being rehabilitated by landowners, community groups and governments

Indicator description

Lands that have been degraded by problems such as salinity or erosion can often be repaired to some extent, if not completely. This rehabilitation can take the form of planting trees, re-establishing grasses, constructing contour banks, installing drainage systems, changing landuse, just to name a few.

The area of land being rehabilitated is of interest to State of the Environment reporting because it indicates the response by society to improving and maintaining the health of our environment.

The various methods of rehabilitation used in an area should be disaggregated into the different types of land degradation identified in the same area. It is also important to identify who is doing the work, whether it be landowners (with businesses and individual farmers identified separately), community groups and governments.
