It provides a ‘two way’ medium of communication to increase awareness of relevant sporting issues, and an opportunity to improve management and planning for sport within the Shoalhaven.
Developed in partnership with Council, Sporting Associations and Clubs/Committees, the newsletter’s long term aim is to increase sports participation through information sharing and support. Through increased participation it is anticipated that existing clubs will continue to grow with positive flow-on benefits to the community.
Published quarterly (February, May, August, November), the newsletter is distributed to approximately 140 individual sporting clubs and management committees within the Shoalhaven.

SHOALWATER WEB SITE
The Shoalhaven Water Group of Shoalhaven City Council, has recently published its web site. The emphasis of the material on the site is to help educate the younger members of the community in the wise, cost saving use of water.
The Shoalhaven Tourism Board and the South Coast Regional Tourism Organisation are about to embark on a very far-reaching marketing campaign combined with wave three of the bush fire recovery campaign.
This will involve the fourth year of the very successful Touring By Car advertising format and will encompass capital city TV in Sydney and Melbourne, national colour magazines, capital city newspapers, capital city magazines and capital city radio stations.
The last time this campaign was run it generated over 20,000 direct inquiries of which 35% were converted into bookings within 10 weeks, with a further 37% indicating they would visit the South Coast and the Shoalhaven within 6 to 8 weeks after the date of the survey. This was the most successful regional tourism campaign ever implemented in Australia.
In addition to the Touring By Car campaign, the Shoalhaven and its strategic partners Tourism New South Wales will be run the fourth year of the Short Breaks campaign. This is aimed at the Sydney market for those people in the 20 to 30 age bracket who wish to get away for short sharp breaks numerous times per year.
The campaign will be a mixture of magazine advertising, press advertising and will be promoting packages of two night stays in the Shoalhaven.
Visitation
Figures Up
Early indications are that the visitations to the Shoalhaven over the Christmas/January period are up and in some cases up as much as 25% This is over and above the year prior to last in which visitation was wiped out by the disastrous bush fires. While the average length of stay is decreasing (this is a national trend) the number of people visiting the Shoalhaven is increasing as is consumer spending. Much of the increase in consumer spending can be contributed to the buoyant economy, especially in our major market place of Sydney
The reasons for this growth are a combination of the marketing campaigns that have been put in place, the increased professionalism of the tourism operators in the Shoalhaven and the impact of the low Australian dollar which is encouraging more Australians to holiday at home. The recent international Terrorist attacks of both September 11 2001 and Bali 2002 have also contributed to more Australians holidaying at home.
There is also a noted increase in the number of international visitors in the Shoalhaven and these can be directly attributed to the exposure of our region overseas by way of the success of the Sydney-Melbourne Coastal Drive marketing campaign in the USA, in New Zealand and in Europe. Again the impact of the low Australian dollar has also helped.
The Economic Development Office provides the latest information in its own Newsletter.
