Many common products in your kitchen, bathroom, laundry, garage or garden shed can be harmful to both your health and the environment if not disposed of correctly. By disposing of your household chemical waste responsibly, you can:
- Help avoid dangerous situations
- Reduce soil and groundwater contamination
- Maintain clear and clean sewers and septic systems
- Avoid corrosion of plumbing
- Keep water, soil and plant life healthy
What happens to the chemicals collected at the CleanOut?
Many of the chemicals collected are recycled. Paints and some pesticides go to a liquid treatment plant in Homebush, batteries and gas cylinders go to recyclers and oil goes to a waste oil re-processor. Glass, aluminium, glass, mercury and phosphor powder from fluorescent lights is all recycled. Some non-recyclable materials are incinerated under strict EPA licencing.
Commercial chemical waste
Business-related and commercial quantities are not accepted at CleanOut centres - telephone the Environment Line on 131 555 to find out correct disposal for businesses
