Anti-barking dog collars
An anti-barking dog collar is the most humane, effective bark control system available.

How it works

Each time your dog barks, the electronic bark-sensing unit releases a brisk citronella spray in front of the dog’s snout. Your dog hears it, sees it and most importantly, smells it. The dog will soon learn that when they bark, the collar will spray.

For best results

  • you should stay with your dog for the first few days you use the collar
  • you should slightly trim long hair in the neck area for better spray effect
  • the unit should not be used with another collar dangling against the unit
  • never leave empty unit on dog
  • the battery should be removed when you are filling the unit or not using it
  • the unit is water-resistant but not waterproof, remove it before swimming or high rainfall

Additional information

Council hires the collar to you for 4 weeks. You should check the due date on the “Agreement for hire of Anti-Bark Dog Collars” and ensure that the unit is returned by this date. As you know the waiting period for the hiring of an anti-barking dog collar is quite lengthy and therefore in order to keep the waiting period to a minimum, prompt return is requested.

In order for the collars to work, they need to be refilled with the “Aboistop Citronella Refill”. It is noted that the collar hire is free of charge, however there is a fee of $33.33 for the citronella refill. Over the course of the 4 weeks of hire, it is possible that the battery may run out and council will provide a replacement battery free of charge.

Problems

All collars are inspected and serviced upon return, however you may still require assistance. Should the unit fail to spray, remove the battery and try tapping the base of the unit firmly on a hard flat surface. One way to test if the unit is working effectively is to point the spray outlet valve away from your face and blow into the noise sensor on the unit.

If the collar does not stop your dog barking, which happens in less than 15% of cases, it is recommended that you consult an animal behaviourist.

Please do not hesitate to contact Council's Environmental Services section on (02) 4429 3202 to arrange for the hire of a collar, or to discuss any difficulties you may have with the collars.
